Travis Blackwelder, DVM MS

Picture
Dr. Travis Blackwelder grew up working daily at this father’s practice the Statesville Bovine and Equine Clinic. At a young age he knew that his lifelong goal was to become a veterinarian and work in the family business. After graduating with a BS degree in Animal Science from North Carolina State University he went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Animal Nutrition. During this time he spoke on his research topics across the US and Canada along with publishing articles in scientific journals and co-authored a chapter in a veterinary textbook.

In 2001 Travis received his DVM degree from North Carolina State University College Of Veterinary Medicine and joined his father in private practice. He is the owner of Statesville Equine Clinic and focuses on diagnostics and treatment of equine lameness.

Travis is on the executive board of directors and currently the president-elect for the NEAEP (northeast association of equine practitioners) and will preside as president of the NEAEP in 2017.  He has also served on the lameness committee and been a speaker and wet lab instructor for the NEAEP.  The NEAEP is one of the top equine veterinarian and podiatry educational organizations in the country and its annual conference brings practitioners and speakers from all over the US and europe.  This position is one Travis has worked very hard to achieve and is extremely proud of, especially in his role with enhancing the veterinarian education in lameness and podiatry.  He has also spoken at lameness conferences in North Carolina and was the lameness chair for the 2016 N.C. State College of Veterinarian Medicine Annual Symposium.

Travis Blackwelder married Lisa Baucom who also is an equine veterinarian in October 2007. They live on small farm in Mocksville along with their 6 horses, 4 dogs, 5 cats and African grey parrot. Travis’ hobbies include working on his farm, golfing, fishing, and spending time with his wife on Kiawah Island, SC.

Dr. B (1946-2014)
The late Dr. H. Dwight Blackwelder "Dr. B" was raised on a dairy farm in rural Davie County. Dr. Blackwelder entered NC State University in 1964 for undergraduate studies and then attended University of Georgia Veterinary School in 1967.

After graduating in 1971, Dr. Blackwelder came to Statesville to practice large animal medicine and surgery. Zach Spencer, DVM

Dr. Zach Spencer became an associate veterinarian with Statesville Equine Clinic in June 2016 and has been a part of the team in some capacity since 2010.

Dr. Spencer received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from NC State College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016 and also has a undergraduate degree form N.C. State. Dr Spencer's focus in veterinary school was equine sports medicine and lameness and that interest has carried over to his professional career with Statesville Equine.

Dr. Spencer spends much of his free time with his wife Lauren and daughter Allie Jean. He also enjoys four wheeling and snow boarding.

Lisa N. Baucom, DVM, IVCA, CVA

Picture
Dr. Baucom grew up riding and working with horses.  She knew from a young age she wanted to be an equine veterinarian and went  on to pursue a DVM degree from North Carolina State University in 2002. After graduation she completed an internship at Littleton Large Animal Clinic in Colorado focusing primarily on lameness and surgery. Her interest in lameness and locomotion led her to investigate alternative therapies such as chiropractic and acupuncture. Her certifications in these areas allow her to effectively incorporate them into her lameness exams and integrate them with modern treatment modalities. She is also furthering her education by taking courses with ISLEP (International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology) in order to keep up with the most modern diagnostics and treatment capabilities for equine lameness.
When not working you can find Dr Baucom either spending time with her husband Dr Travis Blackwelder or riding her own horses with her Australian Cattledog Ru by her side.
