Dr
Travis Blackwelder DVM MS
Travis Blackwelder grew up working daily at this father’s practice
the Statesville Bovine and Equine Clinic. At a young age he knew that
his lifelong goal was to become a veterinarian and work in the family
business.
After
graduating with a BS degree in Animal Science from North Carolina State
University he went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Animal Nutrition.
During this time he spoke on his research topics across the US and Canada
along with publishing articles in scientific journals and co-authored
a chapter in a veterinary textbook.
In
2001 Travis received his DVM degree from North Carolina State University
College Of Veterinary Medicine and joined his father in private practice.
Today he is a part owner of the practice and focuses on equine lameness
and reproduction.
Travis Blackwelder married Lisa Baucom who also is an equine veterinarian
in October 2007. They live on small farm in Mocksville along with their
7 horses, 3 dogs, 5 cats and African grey parrot. Travis’ hobbies
include working on his farm, boating and fishing.
Dr.
Dwight Blackwelder, DVM
Dr. Blackwelder was raised on a dairy farm in rural Davie County.
Dr.
Blackwelder entered NC State University in 1964 for undergraduate studies
and then attended University of Georgia Veterinary School in 1967.
After
graduating in 1971, Dr. Blackwelder came to Statesville to practice
large animal medicine and surgery. His special interests are equine
lameness and reproduction, along with bovine herd health. Dr. Blackwelde
is best known for his diagnosis and treatment of equine lameness.
He is a avid fisherman and also enjoys hunting.
Dr.
Brett Pendergrass
Dr.
Brett Pendergrass joined the staff of Statesville Bovine and Equine
Clinic as an associate veterinarian in June 2009.
Dr. Pendergrass received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the
NC State College of Veterinary Medicine.
He
has worked for Statesville Bovine and Equine clinic since 2003,
before and during veterinarian school.
Dr.
Pendergrass brings his expertise
in the field of equine lameness and podiatry.

Sherry
Winslow - Office Manager
Sherry has been with the Statesville Equine Clinic for 30 years.
She
handles the finances and inventory for the clinic along with assisting
clients on the phone and during their office visits. She grew up in
Troutman and attended South Iredell High School. Sherry also studied
business and accounting at Mitchell Community College. She moved to
Statesville when she married her husband, Dan. They have two daughters,
Avery and Meredith.
Tia
Edward - Veterinary Technician
Tia has worked at the Statesville Equine Clinic for two years. She graduated
from West Iredell High School and attends Mitchell Community College
where she is pursuing her degree in criminal justice. She assist the
veterinarians in their daily duties and cares for the animals hospitalized
at the clinic. Tia has three horses and two dogs and enjoys snowboarding
and softball.
Kelly
Wentz
-
Veterinary Technician
Kelly works p/t at the Statesville Equine Clinic and has worked and
externed with Dr. Travis Blackwelder for 5 years, and is a junior in
veterinary school at N C State. DVM candidate Class of 2010.
She
and her family have a large farm in Newton, NC where Kelly actively
works with the 4H group and teaches riding lessons.
