Lameness Exams:
An examination to determine any gait abnormality or deficit in the horse. A thorough standing and moving exam on different surfaces is often required. Many lameness exams require observing the horse at different gaits and under saddle along with flexion tests. Diagnostic analgesia may also so be required to isolate the location of the affected area.

Pre-purchase Exams:
A thorough physical and lameness exam to determine if the horse is suitable for the buyers intended purpose. The pre-purchase exam is often combined with diagnostics such as bloodwork, drug screens, digital radiographs, soft tissue ultrasound and endoscopy. This exam is intended to give the buyer insight to any conditions the horse has at the time of purchase not as pass or fail exam. It is not a guarantee of future soundness but helps the buyer make an informed decision about the purchase.

Digital Radiology:

The image quality of digital radiographs is superior to conventional radiographs, which allows diagnosis of subtle tissue abnormalities and better interpretation of results. Digital radiographs allow computerized alterations in technique depending on the tissue of interest (bone vs. soft tissue) without taking multiple films. The radiographs can be analyzed on the farm within seconds of capturing the image.

This enables treatment to be started immediately and the horse owner or trainer to visualize results. A CD copy of the radiographs are available to the owner.

Digital Ultrasound:

Ultrasound is used for the evaluation of the soft tissue structures of the horse including tendons and ligament that can not be viewed by radiographs. Soft tissue injuries often occur in sport horses and proper diagnosis with digital ultrasound is necessary so the appropriate therapy can be determined and implemented for a full recovery to the equine athlete. Ultrasound is also used for reproductive and gastrointestinal exams.

Digital Endoscopy (upper airway and gastric):

Endoscopy uses a video camera to image the horse’s airways allowing us to identify problems, and determine the best course of treatment. Gastroscopy, or video camera imaging of the stomach, is the only way to truly diagnose gastric ulcers and monitor therapy. The 3.0 meter digital gastroscope is essential for diagnosing other types of stomach disease (tumors, infections, obstructions, etc) as well as esophageal diseases (recurrent choke, swallowing problems, tumors, ulcers, etc).

Shockwave Therapy:

Picture
Shockwave therapy is used for tendon and ligament injuries and to stimulate bone remodeling. Focused high frequency shockwave therapy consists of a single acoustic pulse of extremely short rise time and a very high pressure maximum, which expends enormous amounts of acoustic energy focused on a small area. Horses who have not responded to conventional treatments often benefit greatly from shockwave therapy.

Common conditions that respond well are: ligament injures, tendon injuries, bone spavin, ringbone, splints, non or delayed union fractures and sore backs. A benefit to this therapy is that it is performed on the standing horse in under 20 minutes. Shockwave therapy often significantly reduces time off and improves the quality of the healing tissue.

IRAP Therapy:

Picture
IRAP, or Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein,  is a relatively new therapy developed to combat joint inflammation. This therapy targets Interleukin-1 (IL-1), a very important mediator of inflammation in the body, and prevents IL-1 from binding in the joint and causing inflammation. IRAP is an autologous therapy (originating from the patients body) and is collected from a blood sample drawn from your horse. That sample is then incubated and then processed to produce the IRAP rich serum which is either immediately injected into the patient or frozen for later use. IRAP treatment is indicated for treatment of synovitis, arthritis, bursitis, and/or tenosynovitis.

PRP Therapy:

Picture
PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma, is a autologous therapy (originating from the patients body) in which the patient's whole blood is processed to concentrate the highest number of platelets from the blood sample. Platelets contain many different growth factors that are released upon their activation. These growth factors enhance the body's ability to repair injured areas such as ligamnets, tendons and skin. This process produces a fraction from the original blood sample that is immediately injected into the patient's injury. PRP therapy is commonly used as an intralesional therapy for injured tendons and ligaments.

Equine Dentistry:

Equine dentistry is performed using both the equine powerfloat and an assortment of hand floats.
Minor dental surgeries are also performed.

Hospital:

The hospital has 8 stalls for both intermediate and ICU care. We have cameras in the stalls that enable our doctors to monitor patients from their home or laptop computer via the internet. We also have 3 small day turnout areas for broodmares and non critical patients.

Reproductive Services:

Artificial insemination of fresh cooled or frozen semen are performed on a regular basis. A liquid nitrogen tank is available for storage of frozen semen. Reproductive ultrasounds are performed daily on mares during the breeding process to determine optimal breeding time and ensure ovulation. Uterine cultures and lavages are performed when deemed necessary to increase conception.

Preventive Medicine:

Routine health checks along with proper immunizations customized to each horse based on age, sex, environment, and risk of exposure. Nutritional and deworming consultation is also covered with each patient.

Chiropractic and Acupuncture:

Provided by Dr. Lisa Baucom DVM, IVCA, CVA
Chiropractic and acupuncture are integrated therapies that are used in conjunction with traditional veterinary medicine to improve soundness and locomotion in sport horses. Dr. Baucom is certified in both chiropractic and acupuncture and is available by appointment.

Surgery:

General minor soft tissue surgery and minor orthopedic procedures.

Emergency:

24 hour emergency service is provided to our established clients. We prefer to see our emergencies at the clinic but ambulatory emergency service is provided to our clients if necessary.

Ruminant Herd Health:

Herd health, pregnancy exams and nutritional consultations available for both dairy and beef herds.
